What is Scratchboard Art?

Scratchboard art is a form of etching:

The material that each work is made of is a hard wooden board featuring a base layer of white clay and top coating of black ink.  To create the work, the black board is scratched with an exacto knife, an action that scrapes off the black ink to reveal a white clay line.  The board is scratched hundreds to thousands of times for each work to create a white etched image.  Works with additional colours are etched fully in black and white, and then an ink of the desired colour is painted over the corresponding area after which it may be re-scratched to provide shading.
